ROAS Calculator: Return on Ad Spend

Return on ad spend (ROAS) shows how much revenue each advertising dollar brings in. Enter the revenue attributed to your ads and what you spent, and the calculator returns ROAS, ROI percentage and the revenue left after ad spend. Add your profit margin to see whether that ROAS is actually profitable.

How it's calculated

ROAS = Revenue from ads ÷ Ad spend

ROAS is a ratio: a ROAS of 4 (often written 4:1 or 400%) means $4 of revenue per $1 of ads. ROI % = (Revenue − Ad spend) ÷ Ad spend × 100. ROAS uses revenue, not profit, so a high ROAS can still lose money if margins are thin. See the break-even ROAS calculator for the minimum you need.

Worked example

You spend $1,000 on ads and they drive $4,000 in sales. ROAS = $4,000 ÷ $1,000 = 4.0x. ROI = ($4,000 − $1,000) ÷ $1,000 × 100 = 300%. If your profit margin is 20%, break-even ROAS is 5.0x, so a 4.0x ROAS actually loses money: $4,000 of sales earns $800 before ads, and you spent $1,000, a $200 loss.

ROAS benchmarks by channel

Medians from the published datasets linked in each row. ROAS is platform-reported, so it depends on each platform’s attribution. The right ROAS for you depends on your margin, repeat purchase rate and how revenue is attributed.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate ROAS?

Divide revenue attributed to your ads by the amount you spent on them. $6,000 of revenue from $2,000 of spend is a ROAS of 3.0, or 300%.

What is a good ROAS?

Many advertisers aim for 4:1, but the real answer is your break-even ROAS. If your margin is 40%, break-even is 2.5x and anything above that earns profit. If your margin is 15%, you need more than 6.7x.

What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?

ROAS compares revenue to ad spend. ROI compares profit to cost, so it subtracts spend from revenue first. A 4x ROAS equals a 300% ROI when you only count ad spend as the cost.

Does ROAS include product costs?

No. ROAS ignores cost of goods, shipping and fees, which is why you should compare it against break-even ROAS before scaling a campaign. The Check vs margin tab does that comparison for you.
